Heath Risk Relation of Asbestos Exposure

Lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma is a rare subtype of asbestos cancer that makes up less than 1 percent of all asbestos-related cancer cases. Tumors are made up of a dense bundle of inflammatory immune cells, including lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell), plasma cells and immobile immune cells called histiocytes. Also called macrophages, histiocytes ingest foreign substances to protect the body from infection.

Despite the fact that this subtype is classified under the aggressive sarcomatoid cell type, these tumors tend to have a mix of epithelioid cells and inflammatory cells. Some patients diagnosed with this subtype of the disease may receive a prognosis, which is excessively optimistic and similar to that of an epithelial cell diagnosis. Lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma an often misdiagnosed variant of sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma.

Common differential diagnoses of lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma

  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Lymphoepithelial carcinoma
  • Ganglioneuroma
  • Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung
  • Pleural-based thymic epithelial tumor

Symptoms and Treatment of Lymphohistiocytoid Mesothelioma for Asbestos Exposure

Symptoms of lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma are similar to other types of pleural mesothelioma and may include chest pain, weight loss, and fatigue. Although information on treating this type of mesothelioma is limited, patients have generally been treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

A doctor will typically diagnose mesothelioma through a medical history, a medical exam, and a series of tests. Because mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, doctors will need to take a thorough account of your work and personal history to determine whether asbestos exposure occurred. If this can be determined, your doctor will want to know the frequency and duration of exposure.

Treatment for lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma is currently the same as treatment for pleural mesothelioma, which often includes surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Because there is no known cure for mesothelioma, surgery is usually performed to relieve the pain of symptoms.
